Resumo

Disciplinary measures ensures that an organisation has an effective and productive workforce, which assists in achieving strategic and operational objectives within the workplace. To attain this, organisations need to implement disciplinary measures in the most effective manner possible and according to existing best practices. The objective of this paper was to recommend best practices in relation to how disciplinary measures are implemented in workplaces. To achieve this, a qualitative research design was utilised by means of a case study strategy, using semi-structured interview to gather data. A total of ten participants was purposively selected within the case organisation, where participant responses was thematically analysed. The findings of the study revealed that a thorough and comprehensive investigation should be conducted  where alleged misconduct is suspected, and reliable and credible evidence from such investigations should be used before instituting disciplinary proceedings. Once obtained, approval should be sought by line management from a higher authority, and disciplinary proceedings should observe substantive and procedural fairness elements. The disciplinary panel presiding over disciplinary measures must also be objective and unbiased. It is recommended that thorough investigations be conducted into alleged misconduct and that credible evidence be used to institute disciplinary proceedings. Moreover, HR/ER staff should support and advise line management during the implementation of disciplinary measures, which should be presided over by a competent and objective disciplinary panel.
