HYBRID IDENTITIES IN PAKISTAN'S ACADEMIC CODESWITCHING

Resumo

The use of digital technology has drastically changed how people engage with one another, allowing for different types of people and languages to come together and changing their perspective of themselves and others. Language and interaction in Pakistan, incorporating the disparate linguistic spheres, has been demonstrated in the use of codeswitching, wherein the speaker fluent in Pashto and English uses the linguistic approach to strengthen their identity. This research aims to understand how in the university setting in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, lecturers and students through interactional ethnography in a globalized and local context, use codeswitching to form multiple selves in their identity. Data were ethnographically collected through participant observation and interviews, and the analysis employed a micro-macro integrated framework based on Bucholtz and Hall (2005). The outcomes as identity shift, demonstrate how CS enables identity switches by incorporating local Pashto culture aspiring for globalized opportunities stemmed from the context of Pakistan’s multilingual education. This research shows how societal changes affect identity formation, laying the groundwork for sociolinguistic research, education policies and practice to advance multilingual education aimed at fostering global citizens.
