Resumen

My study, entitled “The Role of Verbs in the Qur’anic Expressive Styles of the Verses of the Lawful and the Unlawful”, aims to reveal the semantic function of verbs with their various tenses in shaping the structure of the Qur’anic text in the verses concerning what is lawful (halal) and unlawful (haram). This study highlights the significant role played by verbal tense in constructing Arabic sentence structures and clarifying their literal and figurative meanings within the syntactic framework of Qur’anic discourse. Accordingly, the research was divided into two main sections in order to examine the role of verbs in shaping the rulings contained in the verses of the lawful and unlawful. The first section addresses explicit discourse employing the verbs of prohibition and permission and their derivatives, whereas the second section examines discourse expressed through verbal forms that indicate prohibition and permission. The researcher arrived at several conclusions, including the following: 1.        The Arabic sentence in the Noble Qur’an plays a primary role in articulating the rulings of the lawful and unlawful in its expressions. The verb constitutes a powerful structural element in the sentence, whether it appears before or after other elements, whether explicitly mentioned or omitted, and whether it governs nominative or accusative cases. Thus, it represents one of the most fundamental components of the sentence. 2.Numerous Qur’anic verses contain explicit verbal expressions of prohibition or permission and their derivatives, conveying decisive and direct rulings that clearly state the prohibition of certain matters or their permissibility. 3.The explicit expression of prohibition appears in many verses through the word “ḥurrimat” (has been prohibited). This passive past verb effectively conveys the meaning of restriction and prohibition with a definite and obligatory implication. 4.          Passive past verbs contribute significantly to shaping the rulings of the verses concerning the lawful and unlawful by directing attention and emphasizing the obligation to refrain from certain actions, thereby presenting the ruling of God Almighty as an absolute divine legislation.
