Abstract
Environmental issues have been gradually acquiring importance in the Brazilian legislation. An environmental stance inclusion and a sustainable development conception resemble the need for discussions concerning consumerism, œpost-modernity, waste production and Brazilian citizen™s new posture. At the same time, contemporary society is perceived as consumerist, defining desire as its cornerstone and relying on concepts of insatiability and permanent pursuit for new objectives. According to the postmodern bias, current society shapes citizens in order to perform the role of consumers. As a consequence, consumerism™s high standards trigger an alarming waste output, whereas the study of concepts on such topict, current legislation and society™s behavior towards a recent national waste policy becomes fundamental so that proposals submitted by the legislator regarding solid waste management can be better comprehended.
