Abstract

Deforestation is a process caused by human actions, leading to the destruction and erosion of the regeneration capacity, which results in the loss of species, as well as dire consequences for ecosystems. In this sense, this research analyzes the importance of carbon credits as an alternative to mitigate deforestation in Colombia, since they represent a means to counteract climate change proposed by the Kyoto Protocol, taking into account the high carbon emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG). With the use of a descriptive analytical methodology, it was possible to demonstrate that in Colombia projections and strategies have been adopted toward the recovery, maintenance, and management of forests, with social participation of the communities to counteract deforestation in the territories, recognizing the commitment environmental by the different actors, aiming to reduce the CO2 footprint in Colombian ecosystems, the above thanks to the commercialization of carbon credits.
