Mission

To disseminate and encourage the production of scientific knowledge in the area of Environmental Law and Sustainable Development, guided by the academic quality of research regardless of any ideology, giving prestige to internationalization and the maximum Brazilian regional distribution among authors, always with a view to building a more just, free and egalitarian society that can live in a healthier planet.

 

Focus and Scope

The journal Veredas do Direito points out in its subtitle two elements: Environmental Law and Sustainable Development. Therefore, its object of interest is precisely aimed at themes directly related to the areas of concentration of the Graduate Program in Law at Dom Helder Escola Superior (DHES): (1) Environmental Law; and (2) Sustainable Development

In this sense, the purpose of the journal is to constitute an instrument for disseminating scientific and doctrinal works dedicated to aspects and elements that are related to such matters, especially in the area of Law.
Thus, the editorial line to be followed by the journal Veredas do Direito is subdivided into two thematic axes:

(I) Law, sustainability and human rights;
(II) Law, planning and sustainable development.

Thus , the works and articles to be published in the journal must fit into at least one of the thematic axes that make up its editorial line. Occasionally, at the discretion of the editorial board, an issue of the journal can be dedicated to a certain thematic axis or even to a specific issue covered by any of the suggested items.

 

Frequency

From its 20th volume, of 2023, Veredas do Direito starts to adopt the system of continuous publication (rolling pass), making it faster to publish articles as they are approved. There are no issues (numbers) or frequency, as was done until 2022. This measure minimizes the problem of publication time between acceptance and publication of the article, precisely due to the great demand for submissions received by Veredas do Direito. The complete summary and editorial will be published at the end of the year.

 

Open Science

The Open Science movement proposes guidelines for collaborative, shared and public scientific practice. In line with Open Science guidelines, Veredas do Direito adopts a number of practices, such as the free access policy, the code of good practices for editors and the use of social networks to disseminate published works. In addition, it requires the precise indication of the role of each of the authors in articles with multiple authors, encourages the sharing of analysis data sets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts and additional materials, available in open online repositories, such as SciELO Data, Zenodo, Figshare and OSF, if they cannot be published in the work itself, and such information must be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, articles that communicate research must indicate and reference the availability of the contents underlying the preparation of the research and the results obtained.

Veredas do Direito encourages the publication of preprint articles on public platforms, such as Preprints, SciELO Preprints and EmeRI, so that, if applicable, they are openly discussed before being published.

Still in tune with open science practices, Veredas do Direito offers authors and reviewers options for opening the peer review process, with or without identification of their names. Authorization for disclosing the name may be given by the authors at the time of submission of the article and by the evaluators by completing the Open Science Compliance Form.

In the case of publication of the evaluations that supported the decision to publish the article, these may be edited by the editorial board of Veredas do Direito.

The contribution of section editors, if any, is duly credited in the published article. Reviewers receive a declaration of the manuscript's opinion and can also validate the activity in Publons or Reviewer Credit.

Peer Review Process

The Journal Veredas do Direito: Environmental Law and Sustainable Development, from the Master's Course in Environmental Law and Sustainable development at the Dom Helder Escola Superior (DHES), aims to publish scientific articles by authors from national or foreign teaching or research institutions.

1. Unpublished contributions will be accepted, and the publication of an article is subject to its adequacy to editorial standards. The mere receipt of a manuscript does not imply its publication. Exceptionally, the Editorial Committee may accept the submission of works that have already been published and, if this occurs, they will be submitted to the same peer review process as previously unpublished ones. Authors must submit written authorization from the editor of the journal in which their work was originally published, along with a copy of the article.
2. Articles will be evaluated through the peer review process, that is, the articles will be submitted for approval by at least 2 evaluators who have mastery of the topics addressed. Articles will be sent for evaluation without authorship identification.
3. The originals will be immediately forwarded to reviewers. The article selection process involves evaluation by experts and the Editorial Committee. In the table of contents, the sequence of article titles will follow the alphabetical order of the authors' surnames.
4. The journal reserves the right to make normative, spelling and grammatical changes to the originals, with a view to maintaining the cultured standard of the language, respecting, however, the authors' style.
5. Articles published in the journal Veredas do Direito: Direito Ambiental e Desenvolvimento Sustentável may be reprinted, in whole or in part, as long as the source of the original publication is acknowledged.
6. The opinions expressed by the authors of the articles are their sole responsibility.

 

Evaluation phases

Articles submitted through the journal™s website will undergo two evaluation phases: the first phase will be carried out by the editorial team and is intended to verify compliance with the Guidelines for Authors available on the journal's website; in case of approval in the first phase, the article will be forwarded to blind peer review, this being the second phase, in which the article can be approved, approved with mandatory revisions, or rejected.

In all cases, the editorial decision and evaluations will be sent by email to the author “ in case of co-authorship, to the co-author who registered in the submission as the main contact. In case of approval with mandatory revisions, the author will have 5 working days (period that may eventually be extended, depending on the complexity of the requested revisions) to send the revised version of the article through the journal™s system, which will be reviewed by the editorial team. If the revisions are not satisfactory, new adjustments may be necessary or, as the case may be, the article may be rejected. Failure by authors to respond to requests for revisions may also result in article rejection.

Free Access Policy

This journal offers immediate free access to its content, following the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the public provides greater worldwide democratization of knowledge.

Veredas do Direito uses a Creative Commons license (CC-BY 4.0), thus preserving the integrity of the articles in an open access environment. The journal allows authors to retain publication rights without restriction. Thus, the authors are free to share (copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format) and adapt (remix, transform and build on the material for any purpose, even commercially).

Journal history

The journal Veredas do Direito was created in 2004 as a means of interaction between the Dom Helder Escola Superior (DHES) and other national and foreign institutions. Since its first issue, the journal has published research by renowned national and foreign authors, evidencing its concern with the exogeny of its content.

The name of the journal was chosen in reference to the book Grande Sertão: Veredas, by Guimarães Rosa. The idea arose from the various paths approached by the journal due to the integration with different areas beyond Law. The journal's covers have always been designed according to its theme, in order to convey its content to readers from the first visual contact.

Initially, the journal was dedicated to the general theme of Law, but since the opening of the Master in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development at Dom Helder Escola Superior (DHES) in 2009, the journal has dedicated itself to this line of research.
