NATIONAL STATES AND SOVEREIGNTY: AN ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF GLOBALIZATION AND REGIONAL INTEGRATION PROCESSES ON THE RELATIVIZATION OF SOVEREIGNTY

Abstract

The establishment of a new world order, in the post-war period, boosted the advance of globalization, especially in its economic aspect. Sovereignty ceases to be a very personal characteristic of the monarch to become an instrument for the performance of the State at the international level, which sees its most expressive resignification in the formation of the European Union, as a unique integration model, endowed with a supranational authority. In this new scenario, the classical conception of State sovereignty remains insufficient to express its meaning in contemporary times. In the face of such transformations, the present work aims to analyze the impacts caused by the phenomenon of globalization, which triggered the acceleration of the development of regional integration processes, both factors that led to the relativization of the original bases of the classical theory of sovereignty. To this end, a combination of the qualitative method of text analysis with the dialectical historical method was adopted, to investigate the theoretical transformations in the concept of sovereignty, in view of the critical analysis of the impacts of globalization, driving the processes of regional integration, provoking the relativization of state sovereignty. It was concluded that sovereignty is still the central instrument of States for confronting globalizing forces in this new context, allowing the will of States to be implemented.
