Abstract

This paper discusses electrochemistry at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES) as a tool for studying charge-transfer processes. It describes the ITIES concept, including ideal polarization and the formation of the electrical double layer. Different models developed for the liquid–liquid interface are briefly reviewed, emphasizing the importance of the electrical double layer in analyzing experimental data related to charge transfer across the ITIES. Lastly, the thermodynamic foundations of charge transfer across the ITIES are explored, and an example involving one of the most widely studied cations in such systems is presented.
