Abstract

Mining is being reoriented in Saudi Arabia as a strategic industrial pillar, with the recovery of raw materials becoming a core focus of competitiveness, environmental stewardship and national supply-chain resilience. This review paper evaluates column flotation technology as a facilitator for improving the recovery of phosphate, copper, zinc, gold-bearing sulphides, industrial minerals and future critical-mineral streams in the Kingdom. The paper is a structured review, inspired by the recent Springer open-access formatting, from context and objectives to a transparent methodology, thematic synthesis, technology assessment, implementation framework and research agenda. Column flotation is considered because it provides a tall separation zone, controlled air dispersion, froth washing, less mechanical turbulence, and higher selectivity for fine particles compared to many conventional cells. The review integrates evidence from mineral processing, fine particle flotation, nanobubble-assisted flotation, process water recycling, tailings valorisation and mining priorities of Saudi Vision 2030. It argues the biggest opportunity is not just higher concentrate grade but also the creation of a recovery architecture where lost values in slimes, historic tailings and complex feeds are systematically reprocessed. The technology is most promising for Saudi mining operations when coupled with mineralogical characterisation, pilot testing, digital froth monitoring, reagent optimisation, water-quality control, and circular-economy metrics. The review concludes that column flotation can improve raw material recovery, reduce entrainment, water losses and downstream smelting penalties, but successful deployment requires site-specific design, workforce capability, pilot scale validation and integration with national industrial clusters.
