HARMONIZATION OF RELIGION AND CULTURE IN THE LOCAL WISDOM OF NGGUSU WARU LEADERSHIP

Effective leadership requires managerial competence and a strong foundation of values. This study explores Nggusu Waru, the local leadership philosophy of the Bima community in NTB and its implementation in modern education at the Al-Husainy Bima Islamic boarding school. Literally meaning “Eight Squares” Nggusu Waru represents the eight main values of an ideal leader: Dou ma maja labo dahu di Allah SWT dan Rasululah (Pious to Allah), Dou ma bae ade (Intelligent and broad-minded), Dou ma mbani labo disa (Brave and decisive), Dou ma lembo ade ro ma na' e sabar (Authoritative, charismatic, and patient), Dou ma ndinga nggahi rawi pahu (Honest in words and deeds), Londo dou ma taho (Of good descent), Dou ma di woha dou (Present and close to the community), Dou ma ntau ro wara (Sufficient in material and non-material things). This qualitative research using the case study method collected data through in-depth interviews, participatory observation and document study. The findings show that the values of Nggusu Waru are not only ethical guidelines for Kyai but are also integrated into the education system, organizational culture and character building of santri. Its implementation is evident in participatory and fair decision-making, exemplary attitudes and harmonious relationships among all members of the pesantren. This study successfully constructed an educational leadership model that integrates the eight pillars of Nggusu Waru with modern managerial functions (POAC: Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling). This model offers an authentic, contextual and character-based leadership approach that is relevant for advancing contemporary Islamic education while preserving the noble values of local culture amid the tide of globalization.
