Abstract

The introduction of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 has seen the country experience rapid growth in terms of intelligent infrastructure, digital services, smart cities, and technological advancements within its various sectors. The use of IoT and 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) technology is an important factor that contributes towards achieving this goal since they allow for ultra-fast connectivity, massive machine communication, data transfer in real time, and monitoring of infrastructural activities. IoT collects data from physical devices like buildings, transportation system, utilities, industries, health care services, and public security system, which 5G mmWave helps to transmit and process. In this paper, an exploration is made to discuss the potential application of IoT together with 5G mmWave technology for promoting smart infrastructure construction in Saudi Arabia under the scope of Vision 2030. In this research, attention will be paid to smart cities, intelligent transportation systems, energy management, environment protection, public safety, healthcare facilities, and industrial automation systems. Moreover, technical issues, such as propagation constraints of 5G mmWave, IoT security, interoperability, data management issues, energy consumption, and infrastructural costs will be considered. An integrated approach for the implementation of IoT-based smart infrastructures using 5G mmWave networks will be suggested.
